  21. New Year's at the Johnson's

This years list isn't quite as impressive as last year's, I kind of forgot to update it until August so most of the items had to be remembered later, not right after I'd experienced them. It's still a good list though.

I thought this year I'd add a lowlights list as well as there were some truly crappy moments (most of them involving a certain awful landlady).
  1. The worst hair cut ever - March 21

  2. Being screamed at by crappy landlady for her illegal entry to our suite

  3. The car being broken into

  4. The death of the microwave

  5. The spraying pipe in our kitchen

  6. Having to move when it was -30 - December

  7. The move out inspection with crappy landlady - December

I hope your year was great with lots more highlights than lowlights and I look forward to a great 2009.

Out of My Control

  1. If I'm standing in a lineup and people need to cut through it they will always cut in front of me. Even if I stand especially close to the person in front, they still cut in front of me.
  2. I always accidentally sit by the table leg, so every time I move I kick the stupid thing and everyone's drinks wobble.
  3. If there's some sort of defect in a cosmetic problem I'm bound to buy that one.
I had this lipgloss once that when you twisted the base the stick of lipgloss would turn instead of the base. So the angled part would move every time (I'm aware that this probably doesn't make any sense)
I have this blush/bronzer stuff that I love and not two weeks after I got it the lid broke off.

These kinds of things happen all the time!

Funny how our luck works sometimes isn't it? We all have these little quirks, with Michelle her favorite products get discontinued. With Mom she has electronics problems. Maybe it's these silly things that make us each a little more individual.

8 is a Big Number

I have a real post in the works I just keep forgetting to download the cute pictures that go with it. Until then this will have to do.

8 favorite TV shows
  1. Food Network Challenge – I could watch that show all day!
  2. Ace of Cakes – Again, this is an all day one
  3. Gossip Girl – I know it's made for 14 year old girls but I love it, such a guilty pleasure
  4. Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles – not as lame as it sounds and way better than the movies ever were :)
  5. How I Met Your Mother
  6. Grey's Anatomy
  7. Malcolm in the Middle & 2 1/2 Men – Brad didn't watch very much tv growing up and what he did watch was very wholesome so I've had to introduce him to the hilarity that comes from shows about really dysfunctional families
  8. The really strange documentaries on TLC every Sunday evening. Like the girl who didn't grow, the Woman who had this disease that made her legs grow to be HUGE or the people who are morbidly overweight. I get hooked and can't change the channel. My favorite was the one where people flew to Switzerland (?? I could be making that up, I saw it a while ago) to plan their own death because assisted suicide is legal.

8 Books you recommend

  1. The Life of Pi
  2. The Observations (odd but enjoyable)
  3. Wicked / Son of a Witch
  4. Chronicles of Narnia Series

The fact that I can't list 8 books doesn't mean I don't read, because I do, constantly. I'm just really critical about the books I read, they seldom make a huge impact.

8 things that happened yesterday

  1. Made the best Mac & Cheese, the cheese came all the way from New Zealand. It was brought back by Brad's co-worker (it really didn't taste any different than usual)
  2. Worked, and was super bored
  3. Created the greatest ice cream concoction. Melted some chocolate chips, peanut butter and a little cream together. Then stirred into ice cream. It got all chunky and super yummy.
  4. Attempted to make some room on my iPod before I really run out of space
  5. Played (and lost) Ticket to Ride
  6. Washed some dishes
  7. Had a long political discussion with Brad. He's so smart and is great at making sure I understand what's going on. I'm concerned about this coalition thing and upset that there's nothing I can do. All those out there who didn't vote in this past election? I blame you for this mess, I'm confidant that a majority Conservative Government was possible if more people had turned out.
  8. Went to sleep far too late, must kick that habit

8 things to look forward to
  1. Christmas Vacation - 2 weeks off is going to be a dream
  2. Zoo Lights
  3. Christmas Parties – 2 this week start off the season
  4. My kids moving from Sunbeams to CTR's. I'm excited to move with them.
  5. The end of the school semester for Brad
  6. Getting picked up 3 days a week next semester
  7. Living in a place with actual, working heat; and proper laundry facilities.
  8. Spending time with my nephews (don't know when that one will happen)
8 things on my wishlist
  1. A House
  2. Dining room set – it's the plan with this year's tax return
  3. New Couches – Mom's fulfilling this wish by giving me hers in September
  4. A budget that's not quite as tight but still lets us save as much
  5. A Cupcake Courier – such a brilliant invention
  6. A car of my very own, or perhaps a new car for Brad so I can have mine back.
  7. A Cell Phone – this one I get when Brad get's his new one from James
  8. A vacation to Hawaii in the middle of our winter. Hawaii is paradise.

8 things I love about fall
  1. It brings us closer to outdoor skating
  2. Sweater weather
  3. Soup season – I have a thing for soup
  4. There always seems to be a rush of new music released about this time
  5. It gets a little busier at work
  6. We get to use our heated mattress pad
  7. Time to listen to Christmas music
  8. An excuse to use our car starter

I hope your December isn't too busy yet, enjoy every minute of it.

312

(I wasn't paying attention and missed post 300 so I thought I'd celebrate 312 instead)

I'd like to have 312…

  1. dollars
  2. days off a year
  3. pairs of jeans I love
  4. extra square feet in our apartment
  5. reasons to love my job
  6. great friends
  7. miles between me and my furthest family member, none of this Dubai distance
  8. ways to tell Brad I love him
  9. christmas Songs (Oh wait, I already have 340)

Happy Tuesday,
make someone smile today.

Following the Leader

Popular Items / Movies / Movements I never got into

  1. Napoleon Dynamite – didn’t' ever see it
  2. NKOTB's Comeback
  3. Twilight – book and movie
  4. Pirates of the Caribbean – the second was laughable, I didn't see the third
  5. National Treasure - Causes much eye rolling
  6. The Rocket Summer
  7. The iPhone
  8. Skinny leg jeans
  9. Voting for anyone's baby – Vibe 98.5 Calgary's Cutest Baby Contest

Trends I Have Succumbed To

  1. Blogging - though I've been doing it so long I think I started before it was trendy
  2. Facebook - it took a long time but eventually I gave in
  3. iPods
  4. Gmail

I'm sure there's more I just can't think of any right now.

So I know, 3 posts in one day is a bit much but there's very little work to do and I'm feeling very opinionated.

Filler

Not the most entertaining I know, but it will have to do.

Last Movie I Saw In A Movie Theater? I think maybe it was Batman, that's the only one I can recall anyway. I'm not a big Theater person, I'd rather skip the lines and the ticket price watch in my living room.

What Book Are You Reading? “The Observations” by Jane Harris. I picked it up because it's by the same author as Chocolat and I liked that book a lot, this one is proving to have kind of a strange plot and I have no idea where the story is going to go.
– Funny story, I just went to look up how to spell Chocolat and apparently it was written by Joanne Harris, not Jane. So I just grabbed this book randomly then.

Favorite Board Game? Carcassonne and Ticket to Ride, they're a pretty even tie. Really though, I like any of those German games that win the Spiel des Jahres (German game of the year) award.

Favorite Magazine? Martha Stewart Living though lately Maclean's has been read more frequently and is close to over taking Martha. I like that it makes me smarter.

Favorite Smells? 8 by Abercrombie and Fitch, dinner in the oven.

Favorite Sounds? Anything from my iPod, Christmas Music. Our apartment building is on the fourth floor and we're right by the stairwell, so there's a door at the top of the stairs. When the door closes it makes a little thump noise that I only seem to hear when Brad's coming home from work, that's probably my favorite sound.

Worst Feeling In The World? Losing a friend

First Thing You Think of When You Wake? Can't I stay here for a little bit longer? I'm not ready yet.

Fast Food Place? I guess Taco del Mar, I'm not much of a fast food person but I do really like their black bean burritos.

Future Child’s Name? I really like the name Cossette, though I would never actually name a child that. We have a list of them on Brad's palm so when the time comes we'll have some ideas at least.

Finish This Statement—“If I Had a Lot of Money,” I would immediately fly to Hawaii with Brad (he's never been there) and then when we got back we'd buy a house, skipping out of our apartment and forgetting about our damage deposit so we don't have to deal with awful land lady. I'd also buy Brad an iPhone so he'd stop mentioning it.

Do You Drive Fast? When I first got my car I wanted to go fast all the time, it just felt good but now I've relaxed and I drive so seldom that I'm usually pretty responsible.

Favorite place you have visited? London, I saw Les Miserable, The Lion King, The Producers and Stomp all within the week and I've never eaten anything better than the Kensington Crêperie.

Storms—cool or scary? Cool. A couple times Brad and I sat on our balcony, shielded from the rain and bundled up in blankets and watched the lightning and rain.

What Was Your First Car? A red Honda Civic, I can't remember what year but it was definitely from the 80's. It ran great and had a sun roof, I think it made me far cooler in high school.

Favorite Drink? Water. I know it sounds lame but I used to drink a lot of apple juice (it's free at work). Then I did the South Beach, the only lasting effect being that I decided I didn't want to drink those calories anymore so now I stick with water.

Finish This Statement—“If I Had the Time, I Would…” bake a lot more than I do. I'd also be a scrapbooker.

Do You Eat the Stems on Broccoli? I like the stems peeled but I know others don't so if I'm not the only one eating whatever I'm making then I normally don’t'.

If You could Dye your Hair Any Other Color, What Would It Be? Dark brown. I really liked the dark brown but I can't be bothered with the upkeep.

Favorite Sport to Watch? Baseball. Football is the worst and Hockey is close behind which is unfortunate since Brad loves it.

What’s Under Your Bed? Christmas decorations, a wrapping paper rolly bin, luggage. It's really our only storage.

Morning Person or Night Owl? I guess morning person since I don't like to stay up but I don't really like getting up early either. Can I be a mid-day person?

Over Easy or Sunny Side Up? Anyway I can get them. I love eggs but I prefer a little bit of a soft yolk.

Favorite Place to Relax? Bed on Saturday morning.

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor? Birthday Cake from Lics but sadly they discontinued it. It was vanilla ice cream with swirls of frosting and chunks of cake.

Hope you're having a good Wednesday, enjoy the first snowfall.

The Break-in

Poor luck has befallen us. They say bad things come in three's right?
  1. Our microwave broke. We're not as devastated as some would be and have even decided to go without for a while but I miss microwave popcorn, we need to get some Jiffy Pop.
  2. Then we had the pipe leak (pleased to say the fix has held up).
  3. The worst out of the three, and hopefully the last, our car was broken into.
Parked in our designated parking stall at our building and of course they break that little back window, the really expensive one. So what did they take? First let's talk about what they didn't take… the iPod and a bunch of cd's. What did they take? It makes me a little sick to think about it.

Brad's really nice backpack which happened to be full of $300 worth of text books, an $80 calculator and some crappy headphones; nothing of value to anyone but us.
    Jerks

Here's hoping for some better luck

Pajamas, the Official Uniform of Thanksgiving 2008

It's possible I did something this year that I've never done before. Something that I think you'll all be proud of.

I was lucky enough to have two Thanksgiving dinners, one with my family and one with Brad's and they were both so different and so yummy!

Here's the amazing part, at both of those large turkey dinners I ate a very normal amount and came away feeling pleasantly satisfied, not ridiculously stuffed. I even remembered to save extra room for all the desserts at the Hudson's. I think it's a great accomplishment.

Things I’m thankful for this year
  1. Possibly the best part of the Thanksgiving season is that my favorite pie finally makes an appearance. I'm not sure who decided that it should only show up this time of year but every year the Pecan pie makes an appearance and I end up wanting more.
  2. The opportunity to vote
  3. Family
  4. Friends
  5. On-line Ticket to Ride
I hope your Thanksgiving was full of family and friends and sleeping in.

Fall

Winter is coming, and I'm sad about it.
Things I'm not looking forward to:

  1. The lack of heat in our apartment

  2. Having to bundle up for my walk home from work

  3. Walking in the snow in Sunday shoes on the way to church

  4. Not being able to leave the windows open

  5. Not being able to cut fresh herbs from my flower box

  6. No more playing catch in the park and softball games in the sun
  7. Closing up the BBQ
  8. Putting away the sandals
  9. No more trips to the lake

This fall kind of snuck up on me and you can feel winter coming, those months of snow and cold are so long.

This I am looking forward to:

  1. Skating at Olympic Plaza
  2. Christmas and Christmas vacation
  3. Cozy sweaters
  4. Warm quilts

I'm not sure the pro's outweigh the con's but it will have to do.

Missing the Lake

This whole working thing is not so fun after a week off

Right Now I'd rather be:

  • Reading a book – I started and finished 5 while we were there
  • Swimming in the lake – the water is freezing but the heat outside makes it bearable
  • Eating something yummy – we stuck to two meals a day with snacks in between
  • Playing Carcassonne – all 5 expansions at once was highly successful

I'm already looking forward to next year
Pictures to follow

Going, Going, Gone

This is it for a whole week. Tomorrow morning Brad and I are off the Shushwap for an awesome week at the cabin (the internet free cabin), we're super excited about.

The apartment is clean, the food is prepared, all that's left to do is pack. We plan on sleeping in, reading, playing games, eating yummy foods and lots of swimming. Sounds like a perfect weekend to me.

As a final post I leave you with these thoughts

Things I'll Never Say
Crave Cupcake
? No thanks, I'll pass

Oh look, a spider, let's let it wander around for a while

A marathon, that's a great idea, I'm in!

I had a huge dinner last night and I'm still full today

Let's go to a Sum 41 concert

I think I'll ask to speak in Church

Can we please watch National Treasure, or the Mummy

We have to play softball again? But I hate softball

I hate the lake and especially swimming

I hope you have a great week!

The End of South Beach

It's such a relief to be finished! To be able to eat fruit and yummy food again. We're really enjoying my Dad's multigrain bread and we celebrated with a nice ripe pineapple.

We're deeming South Beach a total success, we had a couple goals we were hoping to achieve:
1. Learn to be satisfied with smaller portions
2. Eat dessert less often
3. Eat healthier
4. Lose some weight

We feel that we've reached all of them; we often eat less at dinner yet still leave the talbe feeling satisfied. We know we'll need a snack later but as long as it's a healthy snack then there's nothing wrong with that. Cutting out all sugar for two weeks has helped us realize that dessert is not always necessary so we'll cut back on how much we eat.

And the big one, the weight loss… so how much did I lose in two weeks? 12 pounds! I'm pretty excited about that, I did a little better than I expected.

I don't think I'll weigh myself for a bit because I want to carry this 12 pound high and not worry about gaining a couple back (which I'm sure I will).

So my concluding thoughts on South Beach… it's hard. Really hard but definitely worth the sacrifice, especially if we can stick with these healthy habits.

A List of Sorts

Not the most interesting post but it will have to do for today.
Hopefully you'll learn something new you didn't know about me.

I am: happy
I know: lots about Microsoft Office programs. If you need help I probably know the answer (unless it's about Pivot Tables or Macros)
I want: a Crave Cupcake
I wish: we were ready to own a house
I hate: the green shag carpet in our apartment
I miss: Janine! and Chris and Irena and Dave and my family
I fear: that Brad won't get into UofC
I feel: lighter than I was a week ago
I hear: typing, all around me people are typing, and Steven is talking on the phone
I smell: office air, it doesn't really have a scent
I crave: dessert… cutting it all out for two weeks has been hard.
I search: for new blogs, ideally by people I know
I wonder: what my children will be like
I love: reading and should make time to do it more often
I ache: for my more time with my family and to see my newest nephew
I care: about how I make others feel
I always: put chocolate chips on my pancakes
I am not: always as nice as I should be
I dance: when I'm alone
I sing: in the car
I cry: often, it doesn't take much
I don't always: try as hard as I could
I write: on my blog and that's about it
I win: Carcassonne, especially when I play against Brad
I lose: Whenever I play a game with my brother Rob, though Carcassonne might be an exception
I never: take out the garbage, that's Brad's job
I listen: to music all the time. I'm always looking for a new artist I'll love
I can usually be found: in the kitchen
I need: family and friends around me
I am scared: I'll be forgettable
I am happy about: the end of Phase I on Sunday
I think: our week at the lake can't come soon enough

An Entry to Appease My Mother

Curtesy of Denise

  1. Do you like blue cheese? In most cases no, but I do love some blue cheese crumbles on a hamburger. I think that's the only exception. One time I thought I'd be adventurous and I invited a bunch of people over for dinner and made steak with gorgonzola butter. About half the group either loved it or hated it, I was in the latter.
  2. Have you ever smoked? Nope, not ever
  3. Do you own a gun? That seems like such a silly question… I can't imagine anyone thinking I would own a gun.
  4. What flavor Kool Aid is your favorite? I'm not really a Kool Aid fan, it's just so sugary and fake. I'd rather have water.
  5. Do you get nervous before doctor appointment? Nah, I'm not really one to stress and the doctor is no exception.
  6. What do you think of hot dogs? If they're those really cheap ones then they'd better be around a campfire with a smore to follow, if they're good quality, all meat smokies then this year I've discovered a love like never before.
  7. Favorite Christmas movie? I know it's cheesy, but it's also a classic… White Christmas and A Christmas Story hold lots of family memories.
  8. What do you prefer to drink in the morning? Water. I know it's boring but I'm more a water person than a juice person. Although I did just discover this super yummy smoothie juice from Superstore. Too bad it's a little pricey.
  9. Can you do push ups? Absolutely not. One time I decided I was sick of my really weak arms so I started doing push-ups at night before bed. I think it only lasted 5 days and then it was the weekend so I took two days off and never restarted.
  10. What's your favorite piece of jewelry? My wedding rings. So Sparkly and they represent something important
  11. Favorite hobby? Softball. I'm slightly obsessed since it's softball season and I'm on a team. I could play every night, more than one game. That same sentiment is true of Carcassonne, I also freely admit that I have a problem and the Anvik's make great suppliers.
  12. Do you have A.D.D.? No. I pride myself on being organized and attentive and I'm a good multi-tasker.
  13. What's your weight? You know how people always tell you you'll gain weight after you get married? True in my case… we'll leave the number a mystery.
  14. Middle name? Michelle. There's no good story behind it, it's just a name.
  15. Name 3 thoughts at this exact moment:I'm glad I won't have to walk home in the rain. Wish there wasn't dishes waiting for me when I get home. Wonder if thae Anviks will play Carcassonne after the Vipers game tonight.
  16. Name 3 drinks you regularly drink? Water, Apple Juice (free at work) and a real fruit mix of something with mango in it that we buy when we feel rich.
  17. Current worry? That we'll lose our next softball game
  18. Current hate right now? MarshConnect… I don't want to learn a new system but more than that I don't want to do other's lame work for them.
  19. Favorite place to be? Home with Brad, oh, or the Fireworks competition, that's a fave for sure.
  20. How did you bring in the New Year? Games with family and friends, it was perfect.
  21. Where would you like to go? Disneyland, Hawaii, the lake.
  22. Do you own slippers? Almost more pairs than I can count… I've broken myself of that habit though and I don't replace them as they wear out..
  23. What color shirt are you wearing right now? Cream with brown flowers.
  24. Do you like sleeping on satin sheets? I've never owned any but I agree with Denise, I think I'd slide around too much. I like how cozy cotton ones are.
  25. Can you whistle? Yes
  26. Favorite color? Purple
  27. Would you be a pirate? Nah, I'm far to high maintenance for that type of lifestyle. And I don't think scurvy would agree with me.
  28. What songs do you sing in the shower? I don't sing in the shower, never have. When I lived in the duplex next door to the 4 boys we used to be able to hear them sing in the shower, that was enjoyable.
  29. Favorite Girl's Name? I've never been one of those people that picks out names… if I had to choose I'd probably go with Grace, after my grandma. It would take some serious thought though.
  30. Favorite boy's name? Same deal as above minus the Grace Part
  31. What's in your pocket right now? Girls pockets are just made to look fashionable. You don't actually use them.
  32. Last thing that made you laugh? Last night when I ticked Brad, that was fun.
  33. Best bed sheets as a child? I don't remember any fancy ones though I'm sure I had them.
  34. Worst injury you've ever had? While running down the stairs my ring got caught on the metal plate. 3 stitches later you have my worst injury.
  35. Do you love where you live? Yes except for how tiny it is. I love the price, the location and that I share it with Brad.
  36. How many TVs do you have in your house? Just one and it's old and crappy. If my in-laws ever buy the new one they're planning on we'll get a free upgrade.
  37. Who is your loudest friend? I work with this girl Amera. She's fabulous and fun and silly and beautiful and I love her but she's often very loud.
  38. How many dogs do you have? None. And we'll probably keep it that way forever. Everyone in a while I get puppy fever but once I'm actually around dogs I remember that the novelty wears off in about 3 minutes.
  39. Does someone have a crush on you? I bet Brad does :)
  40. What is your favorite book? Maybe Wicked, or Life of Pi. I don’t know if they're my favorite but I enjoy them.
  41. What is your favorite candy? Lindor Chocolates, gummy worms, sour soothers, Swedish berries, pretty much anything that's sugary.
  42. Favorite Sports Team? That's a tough one. I watch hockey but only because Brad likes it… we don't have cable so I never get to watch baseball or I'd have a favorite for sure. I guess I would have to say the Flames but only because there's not much else to choose from.
  43. What song do you want played at your funeral? I'm terrible at thinking of songs to fit the moment, this would require days of scrolling through my iPod.

Sorry it's not a better post but hopefully it'll be enough for now.

Life Goals

Today has been such a nice day.

My boss is gone, that tends to increase production and decrease stress so Iwas extra productive. Here it is 3:00 and we don’t have anything left to do. It’s kind of nice to be so relaxed.

So I've slowly been adding to this list of things I'd like to accomplish in my life, what better place to share them than here...
  1. Go to the Conference Centre to watch the 1st Presidency Christmas Devotional

  2. Stay at the Chateaux Lake Louise

  3. See Straylight Run in concert

  4. See the play Wicked

Not life changing activities but things I'd like to do one day.

Still Great

I don't normally resort to a weekend recap but it seemed appropriate tonight.

  1. We start with a really painful massage...
  2. And move right on to the terrible haircut. There were all these crazy layers on one side but not the other, I finally took some scissors to it and it's better. Not fixed, as nothing will help the back but better.
  3. We end Thursday with some great Tempura and Dynamite rolls with friends.
  4. Friday starts out better, homemade pancakes with strawberries and whipped cream.
  5. We go to buy Brad a softball glove and find one for $80, the story turns great though because we went to Walmart right after and found the exact same glove for $45! The expensive one was returned.
  6. Friends came for dinner (really great hamburgers) and lots of Wii (always a good time).
  7. Saturday starts with the discovery that I'm strangely covered in really itchy hives (they've stuck around all day). I can think of no allergies and I haven't switched detergents... thank you Benedryl for keeping the itching at bay.
  8. We played catch in the park with the aforementioned new softball glove
  9. and had a super yummy lunch of chicken salad and croissants.
  10. A trip to Banff for dinner to the Maple Leaf Grille finished off tonight. The risotto was awesome! The chocolate souffle disappointing. Elk is much better than I expected, it was delicious.
  11. Tomorrow will include dinner with Brad's extended family at the Grandparents,
  12. and on Monday we'll eat dinner and chocolate cake with peanut butter icing at the Wiebe's to celebrate a birthday.

There were some definite low points... the haircut, massage and hives stand out but this has been the greatest long weekend. We've gone to bed early and slept in late every morning. I'm dreading work on Monday but refuse to let it spoil the rest of my weekend.

I hope yours was just as great.

On Single Life

So I read a similar blog post recently that made me consider my own time as a single adult. Here are the facts I came up with.

From the time I moved to Calgary until June of 2007

I’ve had 23 roommates,
24 if you include Brad
I’ve lived in 4 different houses
In 5 different wards in 2 different stakes

23 roommates is pretty impressive I think, so I thought I’d come up with a few lessons learned from them.

  • “Can I talk to you about something?” never has a good ending
  • If your roommate is engaged when she moves in don’t expect to see her... ever
  • 2 fridges make kitchen life so much more pleasant
  • If something breaks, no one will fix it
  • The garbage will be ignored for as long as possible until the person with the least willpower finally gives in and takes it out.
  • Don’t let roommates leave unwanted items behind... someone is eventually responsible for them and it will probably be you.

And the most important lesson,
Brad is easily the best roommate I’ve ever had. I think I’ll hold on to him.

You probably didn’t know – Your turn (From This Fish – Jan 23)

  1. I get the hiccups more often than the average person
  2. I get really chatty in bed at night after the lights are turned off
  3. I write lists for almost everything I do, there are three on my desk right now
  4. I love brussel sprouts and think vanilla ice cream is a topping, not to be eaten on its own
