We all know with craft blogs that original ideas are often hard to come by, we find ideas we love and make them our own but we didn't come up with the idea ourselves. I feel like I've finally done something original here and I'm excited about it.
I'll show you the finished product and then explain.
Behold my Make-up Magnet Board.
Behold my Make-up Magnet Board.
I have a friend who is beautiful and stylish and has always loved make-up but recently took a course that intensified her love. Her renewed interest has worn off on me and it made me remember eye shadows I'd hidden away that were gathering dust. I pulled them all out and was shocked at just how many I had. My old make-up organization/storage consists of a basket that sits on my bathroom counter, I put all my hair stuff and make-up stuff in the basket and used maybe 3 shadows in my daily rotation. With the addition of my pile of eye shadows it now looked like this.
The basket was a mess and I was overwhelmed with all my choices never knowing what to use, digging through to see what I had and find what I wanted was a pain. I needed a way to display them all and my brilliant mother and I came up with this idea.
I started by making a magnet board, (nothing original here), I used this super ugly frame I found at Salvation Army.
I painted it (The hard way, with a brush instead of spray paint. I look forward to spring when the weather lets me spray paint again.) and then glazed it.
I went to the hardware store and picked up some metal and had them cut it to fit inside my frame. Then I used spray adhesive to stick some fabric to the metal. I put it all back together and it looked like this.

Here comes the brilliant part though.
Here's the stash of eye shadows we're talking about (I've even added a couple since this picture).
I went to the dollar store and picked up a bunch of magnets and hot glued one to the back of each shadow (I actually needed 3 magnets for my bronzer). I considered using a stronger glue but when the makeup is empty I want to be able to peel the magnet off, hot glue lets me do that and it's held up really well.
Next I wanted a place to store my brushes and liners though. An orange pill container with some oil rubbed bronze spray paint made it beautiful and 3 extra strong magnets glued on the back holds nice and secure.

Now it hangs in my bathroom wall and every morning I'm excited to play with my different make-up. It feels sort of like art and an expression of me.
I thought tomorrow I'd do a little feature of how I use some of this make-up and talk about my favorite products so come back and check it out.

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 319 of 319 Newer› Newest»they actually make a magnetic paint now (the only place I have seen it is walmart) I think that may work as well as the buying metal method
I love this! I 'pinned' your page to my Pinterest board. Great idea.

Great idea! One recommendation you might want to consider, though, is using 'peel and stick' business card magnets. You can cut them the size you want, and stick them to the back of anything. When you're done with them, peel them back off. The magnets are reasonably strong, and you can decide how much magnet you need for any given item.
Here's a link, just so you can see what I mean:

LOVE it! Here is my knock off version using a cookie sheet! http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.2515345117874.2124936.1080579248&type=1
Love love love this idea! Was it just plain metal fit inside the frame or what type of metal did you use? I am planning to make one of these now!
New follower - found your blog through my friend who shared this with me! My blog is http://cheapskate4life.blogspot.com if you want to follow back and/or check out my giveaways! :)
I love this soo much!! I am soooo doing this!!!!
Thank you for posting!!!
Hi, I read lots of comments and there are so many so I am sorry if I missed this question maybe being answered but I was wondering something. What else could you use instead of fabric to cover the metal sheet? I am thinking of maybe something you can clean if some of the make-up from fingers get on the board? I would love a recommendation! Thanks.
I loved this idea as soon as I saw in on Pinterest. I've been to two hardware stores trying to get a piece of metal cut to fit the frame I bought and they all said they don't cut metal. Where did you go?? Or were you just lucky and one of the sizes fit perfectly?
I like your idea.
This is amazing. My mother recently made me a jewelry board using a window pane (http://creativityinthewilderness.blogspot.com/2011/12/home-made-presents-are-best.html) but I think it would be even better used for making a magnetic make up holder! Each pane could be a type of make up. Can't wait to make it :) Thanks for the inspiration!
Great idea!!! Hope you don't mind me posting a link back to you on my page, if not let me know. Thanks!
I made a frame for my earrings and love how it looks in my bathroom. I stapled screen (from a window screen repair kit) to the back of a wooden frame and hung it with sheer pink ribbon.
Just saw this on pinterest... I'm making this for my messy daughter!!! Thank you!!! Brilliant!!!
Thanks for the great idea! I made one for myself and then made one for my daughter for her play makeup. It was a great project!
Here's our project.

it's truly awesome, only I recommend not keeping any makeup or makeup brushes in the bathroom, due to the steam and bacteria. :)
Going to make this for my 16 year old daughters bathroom. Should definitely help with the cluttered sink, thanks

That is such a great idea! :)
This is a great idea! I was thinking those magnetic pencil cups made for the fridge or locker might be handy here. You could also use a magnetic locker mirror in the middle. We are always hip chucking each other for mirror space at our house. It would free up the one at the sink for a little while.
Love, Love, LOVE!!! Definitely going to try this one!! :) Thanks for the inspiration!

So, each time you use up an eyeshadow, will you be able to just break the magnet off and hot glue it to its replacement?
Hi there,
You seem to be over the magnetic make up board making...but if you are still making them I would love one. I have a paypal account.
Please email me if you're interested.

Hey there,
If you are still making these I would love for you to do one for me!
I have a paypal account too.
Please email me at christyerin@gmail.com
thanks!!
Great idea..but you didn't come up with a genius idea.. Ive had this up in my vanity area for the last 3 years..sorry.. But it IS awesome!!! Love your colors..Mine is black and red paisley..:)
Sorry to tell you..you DON'T have an original idea..I've had this board..frame and all in my vanity area since 2003....sorry to burst your bubble... Yours is lovely..Mine is black and red paisley..I got tired of digging through train cases of make up looking for the right color..
You could also put a mirror in the middle and have a wall hanging vanity. I think I may have to do just that! :) great idea!
I found this through Pinterst. I made it! LOVE IT!!
What a great idea!! My daughter is super excited to make this for her new "look" in her room.
Your idea inspired me to try one! I love it so much! It is such a brilliant idea!

I actually saw this on shelterness.com and it inspired me to make one. I even included the picture of yours at the bottom of my post to demonstrate a great use for magnet boards (but since I didn't know it was yours, the picture source is sheltnerness.com.
I just found this post on Pinterest and thought, haye I know that board! ;) Hope you can stop by my blog and check out the post that I did on Fabric Magnet Boards that was, in part, inspired by yours! Here's the link to that post, if you're interested: http://madjackie.blogspot.com/2011/05/diy-fabric-magnet-board.html
Following you through GFC!

Awesome project! did you just put stain/varnish on your color or paint? did use a gel or certain kinda? did you also do a clear coat over it?
This is brilliant and you should be excited about it! I am totally going to repin this on Pinterest! Awesome! @JennyQ www.TheQ411.com
great job!!!
Wow! That is fantastic. I've really got to make one (and maybe start wearing a bit of make-up again!).
I am in the process of making one right now, I just wanted to share that I got magnetic spray paint from Michaels to spray on the glass of my frame. I figured it would be easier than getting metal cut and I would be able to make more than one for gifts. You can paint over the magnetic paint if you want too. It was about $7 and I used a 50% of coupon!

Hate to keep saying genius, but there's just no other word for that.
This is so awesome!!!
HOLY CRAP. This is BRILLIANT! I have a small bathroom and I always end up leaving my makeup on the bar in my kitchen. This is so incredibly amazing and I WILL be making a trip to Michael's and getting this DONE! Thank you soooo much!
A very cool way not only to flaunt your make up collection but also maximize your magnetic board. Your a genius.. :D
I love you! LOL this is the best thing ever...
SUPER idea, thanks so much! I can't wait to do this - I have my two girls back at home (ages 25 and 22) and they are CONSTANTLY in the bathroom and it's a mess. THIS IS GREAT! I can't wait to get started... today is a good day! Thanks again!!! I'm definitely going to keep my eye on your blog. Great looking out for us crafty gals!

I LOVE this. What a great idea! Going to do this for me and my daughter.
Stumbled upon this page.
Great idea!
I like having everything in the open too, instead of mess within a box.
Unfortunately the home depot does not cut metal , I check today ! :(
Very cool idea- and could perhaps be modified for in the kitchen in some way (Maybe herbs and spices or kitchen utensils)....I love the pattern you put on it- practical and pretty :-)

I made this and it looks so cute! Thanks for sharing! However I cannot get anything to stay up bc the magnets are too weak or my stuff is too heavy! Where did you/do you get the stronger magnets??
One word... BRILLIAN! Cant wait to try this myself. my apartment is small so this is a big space saver for me :)

what a great idea!! love the fabric you chose!
I LOVE this too! Do you think it would be cheaper/easier to buy a magnetic dry-erase board? I've never bought metal. I'd imagine strips of magnets would also save a few pennies. Less money to make = more money for makeup :-P
How fun is this! I'll have to blog about it!
Im a makeup artist so always looking for fun organization!

I LOVE this! Thanks for such a great idea. I have TONS of makeup and have to keep my face/bronzers, eye makeup in different bags and then put them in a purse because they have overgrown baskets.. lol
As soon as I get the time, I am going to make this and link back to you. Featuring you on my blog. I will also give you my featured button as well. (Need some time though, lol)

I did this last night :) Except, I just bought a magnet/dry-erase board from Walmart. I hot glued some purple fabric to it, with some Zebra ribbon around the edges, and I also glued some buttons to the frame for decoration. I screwed some 'C' screws to the bottom and to the sides to hang some necklaces/braclets from it. Thanks for the idea :)
Absolute Genius! This will work great for both my bathroom and my daughters :) Thanks for being so clever :) Kind regards from Spanish Springs, NV
this is genius! Love it
Love this idea! I plan to make most of my Christmas gifts this year. With two daughters and three grand daughters, This would make a great start on my gifts. Thanks for sharing.
Saw this on Pinterest. Very clever idea!

this really is one of the greatest ideas OF EVER. well done!!!
Uau! I love it!
Kisses from Brazil!
I do something similar with my jewelry... I have a cork board (bulletin board) and I have these cute pushpins that are cute colors and they are large so they hold a lot of weight. I put all my necklaces and bracelets on them. Turns out really cute. Cool idea!
I tried sheet metal from Home Depot, but the magnets I have didn't stick to it - what kind of metal specifically did you get? I have an unfinished project!
I love the idea so much I tried it! But, my magnets keep falling off, any idea why??
They just showed this on Dr Oz & I went to Pinterest to see if I could find it. I have discovered you can find most anything on Pinterest! Yours is beautiful. The lady on Dr Oz said to buy a magnetized board. Thanks for sharing.
Great idea, will post this idea with a link and credit to your blog tomorrow. Hope that is ok :)
I made one of these after seeing your blog and I just have a couple of questions. I used magnetic tape instead of magnets, because I thought that it would hold up better, but i'm having some problems with some of my eyeshadows falling off. Any suggestions? Thanks!!
I know it's been a while since you posted this, but I found it on pinterest and had to say it's freaking genius! I am SO making one this weekend - thanks for sharing it!
Patty
UH-mazing!
I have no counters in my dinky bathroom and have been struggling for space and solutions, LOVE it!
Omg I so need to do this! I love my makeup but I tend to forget what I have and only use the same makeup all over again. Genius!

How does this method affect make-up that is creme or pasty? Does it all fall to one side and if so, how do you address this? Or is this literally just for powers and stuff that isn't going to settle?
I made one and I LOVE it!! I am having a hard time finding something that will actually keep the magnats on the make-up, but when they do stick, it's too cool!!
I know you've probably heard this a billion times, but the pill bottle idea for your brushes is BRILLIANT! And your board colors are beautiful. I think out of all the magnetic makeup mirrors I've seen yours is my favorite! Thanks for sharing. ps Getting an ugly pic for super cheap at a thrifty store is also a great idea. Beautiful, economical, and useful...brilliant.
That's awesome gonna use this idea
This board is really amazing.

terimaksih mas infonya sangat bermanfaat sekali , Imformasi tentang make up mata sayu yang saya dapat dari blog anda menambah ilmu bagi saya.
This also works with a cookie pan or whatever its called :). all you would have to do is paint it! Anyways, this is an amazing idea and i will be doing it soon.
Such an elegant creative way to display your make but i'd rather just keep them organized in a drawer cuz i simply have so many!
Thanks for this awesome idea and tutorial. Just got done making mine today. :) - Jessica (cutesycrafts.com)
Can you please tell me if this really worked in the long run? It worked for me at first, but them some of my make-up started falling down! My favorite eye shadow broke :(
If you want a portable makeup organizer, check out www.getbeautybutler.com It works so well, you can carry it in your purse and the makeup will stay on the tray!
Well how the hell do you make a magnet board?
I'm new to Pininterest and absolutely new to DYI I'm talented when I get nice detailed describtions but I found that people on Pininterest expect you to know things....
This idea is brilliant! I love the creativity. One word of advice, leaving your makeup in the bathroom (if this is the bathroom you shower in) is a bad idea bc the steam and heat from the shower aren't good for the make up. It's better to keep make up in a cool dry place
Very informative article and useful products. Thanks friend!
Visit our website for Cosmetic Skin Care Treatment - http://www.alladerm.com/
I love this idea. and spray painting the orabge medicine bottles --perfect!!
This is so cool! I would love to so this since I'm obsessed with eyeshadow. What hardware store did you go to to get the metal?
I've bought my metal at two different places, Totem, which is now owned by Rona and also Home Depot. Just make sure it's not aluminum because it wont be magnetic. I would recommend you take a magnet with you so you can test it.
Does the metal rust eventually being in the bathroom?
I'm reorganizing my room and came across this post. I was wondering how I could save space and this is one of the answers! I'm DEFINITELY going to do this! Thank you so much!
This is a great idea. Using magnets is better than using glue. By considering this value I have bought some magnets from 3P Company. Really it is awesome.
I made one too! Totally inspired by this!
Just use a much bigger frame..or two separate frames! It would be a collection of art if you used two of three!
You could use a bigger frame or even a couple if frames and make it a collection of "art"! I think it would look very cool!
Love this! I sell Avon and think this will be a wonderful way to display! Thank you for sharing! www.countrygirlbeauty.us

Hi Laura - I was notified by a friend of some stolen content - while looking for mine, I came upon some of yours. You may not mind but in case you do, here it is: http://livingho.me/2013/11/29/okay-girls-here-is-something-to-definitely-try-out-hit-up-your-local-dollar-store-and-purchase-a-cookie-sheet-decorate-it-with-some-snazzy-scrapbook-paper-next-go-to-the-craft-store-and-get-some/
What a wonderful idea!!!! I should try that!!! you are such a genius!!
Question for you, is there any issue with traveling with makeup that is backed by magnets?
In any event, THANK YOU! I love this idea. I don't have drawer space and my husband will ask where to write the thank you note since this will help clean up my bathroom floor filled with multiple travel makeup bags!
Such a cool idea.
